[bowelcleanse] Fwd: Tell Congress: I want an Organic Farm Bill

Hi Folks,

I know I'd like to see Congress enact an Organic Farm Bill that promotes
agriculture for food that supports life and health instead of economic
growth. How about you?

I figure if we support life, our economy will support life, too.

Thanks,
Robin

Dear Robin

As I always say, the Internet is like a box of chocolates, (organic
hopefully) you never know what you're going to get. This week I was
asked to participate in a /New York Times: Room for Debate/ forum about
"How to Improve the Farm Bill".

For "The Farm Bill, Beyond the Farm"
<http://action.fooddemocracynow.org/go/539?akid=477.315124.5yGh2w&t=7>
debate, I submitted a piece titled, "We Need an Organic Farm Bill". As
the head of a grassroots organization based in Iowa that advocates for
family farms and sustainable agriculture, I felt it important to convey
the urgent message that so many of us know and more Americans are
learning everyday:

/In order to meet the serious challenges of the 21st century, U.S.
agricultural policy in the farm bill must shift from its focus of
creating cheap commodities and artificially propping up income for
farmers, toward implementing best agricultural practices for sustainable
and organic production methods.
/

Please take a moment to read the rest of the short piece, which lays out
a few policies to solve current problems posed by our nation's
overreliance on industrial chemical agriculture.

There are a number of excellent pieces by the fellow panel of experts,
including the Environmental Working Group's Craig Cox, National Farmers
Union's Roger Johnson and the American Jewish World Service's Ruth
Messinger, among others, each who share inspired views for reforming
current agriculture policy. Please take a moment to read the important
debate on our food system and share your thoughts at the /New York

*Help Create Real Solutions; Support an Organic Farm Bill!*

Right now the perennial debate in Washington DC about food and
agriculture policy is once again picking up with the renewal of the Farm
Bill and politicians are listening to lobbyists more than ever.

Last year you helped shut down the undemocratic Secret Farm Bill with
more than 100,000 phone calls from Food Democracy Now! members across
the country.

But that's not good enough. We have a larger mission.

*We'll deliver your message to Congress, the USDA and the White House
that it's time to make organic food and sustainable farming a priority.*

If we want to build a world for our children that makes access to
healthy food a reality, protects the environment and puts farmers first,
then we have to put our ideas for change forward to those who serve us
in Washington.

Sure, calling an Organic Farm Bill may sound bold, but on the ground in
Iowa, where our rivers and streams are among the most polluted in the
nation, we're looking for a system of agriculture that mutually benefits
farmers, our environment and the health of our children.

America can no longer afford to continue to blindly stumble down the
toxic and costly path that industrial agriculture has paved for far too
long. It's time for wise solutions posed by our nation's leading
sustainable and organic farmers that work with nature and prioritize
human health and environmental stewardship. Pleasejoin us and tell your
friends to join you!
